Book Synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.
Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.
My Review:
A Gothic Novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the very end!!
I am absolutely in love with everything in this novel! The Story, the plot, the characters, just EVERYTHING about this book is fantastic!
We meet the main character Juliet a former lady of high society who is now working as a maid because of a scandal that disrupted her whole family. She soon discovers that her Father, the person responsible for the scandal, is somehow alive and after years of not seeing or hearing a word from him she sets off in search of him.
On the way we meet Montgomery who is her father's assistant. Juliet finds herself very attracted to Montgomery not only because he understands her but because he has grown into a very handsome young man who seems to have a soft spot for her and gives into her every whim.
Then we have Edward who is found after being lost at sea for several days. He is very close to death and takes a interest in Juliet from the moment he lays eyes on her. He is a survivor so Juliet seems to think they have that in common. However as she gets to know him better she can't help but to think that he is concealing an important part of his past from her and she is determined to find out what it is.
The overall feeling of the book is very Dark and Mysterious. You know that her father is some kind of mad scientist who is conducting experiments that are against the morals of most men. But you really have no idea how mad he is until the main characters arrive on his island and by then it is too late. Juliet finds herself trapped on the island like a prisoner because the next ship that will arrive at the island is not scheduled to come for at least a month. And to top things off one of her father's experiments has gotten out and is killing off the islanders one by one.
This story is brilliant and I honestly cannot wait to read the second book in this series to see what is going to happen next!
